BUJU BANTON DRUGS CHARGE NEWS

First, reggae singer Buju Banton was in the news this month because of his best reggae album Grammy nomination. More on that later.

Now Banton, a Jamaican performer whose real name is Mark Anthony Myrie, is in federal prison in Miami, the Miami Herald reports.

He's been in custody since Thursday, arrested on a charge of conspiracy to possess, with intent to distribute, more than 5 kilograms of cocaine, a DEA spokesman said.

[Update, 10:27 a.m., Dec. 14, 2009: Banton allegedly attempted to buy cocaine from an undercover officer in Miami, the Associated Press reports.

According to court documents, Banton and two others contacted a police informant last week about buying cocaine in Sarasota. Drug Enforcement Administration agents say Banton negotiated the purchase and was observed inspecting cocaine offered by the undercover officer. The other men were also arrested Thursday when they allegedly attempted to buy the drugs.

Banton's record label has not commented on his arrest

It seems that the 5 Star General is still at war with the Portmore Empire as he cusses Kartel and gets booed for it. The Warlord wants no peace with Kartel and this years Sting Concert seems to be the battleground for a Bounty Killer Vs Vybz Kartel confrontation. Kartel has said that he wont clash with Bounty but we shall wait and see.

I just came back from my holidays and was shocked to find out about the passing of Kevin "Squingy" Bennett, the legendary selector out of Bass Odyssey. It came as a shock because I only recently heard that he was fighting a terminal illness and the annoucement of that and his death have come out of the blue. For those not in the know to put it simple Squingy was the Don selector, possibly the best in the dancehall business.

I've been collecting and listening to Bass Odyssey clashes and mixes since 1993.Year after year, title after title, he came he saw and more often than not he conquered. Without a doubt Squingy could mash up any soundclash and was respected and feared amongst his peers and loved by his fans.

Alongside David Rodigan, Squingy was my favorite selector.He represented Bass Odyssey for 18 years and the soundclash and dancehall world has lost a real legend. Charismatic and cool this man won clash after clash with specials and dubplates alike. Alongside DJ Mark he took apart many a big sound system and was extremely influential in the dancehall scene. A big down to earth character who brought jokes and excitement to the dance, a soundkiller who could take on and beat the best of them.

Squingy was at the top of his profession for a long time. A true master in the game, many aspiring selectors should learn and study his technique. A terrible and unexpected loss to the reggae community may his soul rest in peace.

OFFICIAL BASS ODYSSEY STATEMENT......

Kevin "Squingy" Bennett was a legend, a product of natural raw talent. It is with much grief that we must inform the public that he is no longer among us. At 6.40am on Tuesday 24th November 2009 we were informed of his death in a hospital in Tampa, Florida. It is reported that his lungs collasped which lead to the failure of other organs.

A little over five years ago, he was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Although there is no cure he had been receiving adequate treatment in both Jamaica and the United States. At this time we extend gratitude to those who have helped us to support and maintain Squingy’s life until now as that in itself is a miracle from the
Almighty.

Kevin was a proud, strong, loyal and dedicated member of our family who bravely fought this obstacle to the final second and lived his life to the fullest in light of the surrounding circumstances.

We appeal to the true Squingy friends and family, the loyal Bass Odyssey fans and supporters of the music that effort be made to preserve his important legacy and contribution.Let us bury the man as a legend.

We maintain that we have always supported Squingy and the entire staff and in extension Alexandria community have stood by his side 100 per cent. Keith Walford and Kirky C are making the necessary arrangements to ship his body to Jamaica where he will receive an honourable burial.

We appeal to everyone to rise to the occasion and support us in honouring a legend for his lifetime and dedication to entertaining fans around the globe.

Thanks to those who have expressed their support and condolences, they are our strength in this time of grief.

Kevin'Squingy'Bennett, died on November 24 2009 at the Tampa General Hospital in Florida at approximately 4:30 a.m. due to heart failure. He had suffered from a terminal illness for several years.

The selector was a member of the Bass Odyssey sound for 18 years and has been with them through countless sound clashes, in which he built his name across the world. Squingy along with fellow selector DJ Mark, lead Bass Odyssey to wins in countless clashes including 2005's UK Cup Clash, 2005's New York Cup Clash, 2005's Death Before Dishonour and 2008's U.K Cup Clash.

Last week when The STAR spoke to his long time friend, Richard 'DJ Kirky C' Salmon, of Poison Dart Sound, he said that the disc jock had been admitted to the hospital in Florida on Sunday November 15. According to Kirky C, 'Squingy' had been in Florida seeking treatment after battling with a terminal illness for years.

In a release sent to THE STAR then, Squingy sought assistance through the 'Squingy Fund Raiser', and he stated that; "for years I've been travelling and entertaining the world. I've given everything to my fans and neglected my own body. I have a terminal illness and it's time for me to focus on maintaining my health as best I can. Moving to the US is going to allow me to receive adequate health care."

As the news of his death spread yesterday, persons expressed their condolences and spoke fondly of the disc jock. According to a release sent from Bass Odyssey, "Kevin was a proud, strong, loyal and dedicated member of our family who bravely fought this obstacle to the final second and lived his life to the fullest in light of the surrounding circumstances."

The release further stated that, "We appeal to the true Squingy friends and family, the loyal Bass Odyssey fans and supporters of the music that efforts be made to preserve his important legacy and contribution. Let us bury the man as a legend. Thanks to those who have expressed their support and condolences, they are our strength in this time of grief."

Bass Odyssey's Yaniq Walford, explained to The STAR that even when Squingy began feeling ill and left front-line duties, he was behind the scenes providing a nurturing hand to the younger selectors.

In his tribute to the fallen selector, Kirky C said, "Squingy was a fun guy, enjoyed giving jokes, loved sports and music. I think he should be remembered as just the greatest selector."

When THE STAR spoke to Coppershot's Matthew Gray he also added, "the world has lost a icon in the music business, Squingy rest in peace. He and Bass Odyssey were the biggest influence to Coppershot, they were all we listened to before we started our sound, and his memory will live on forever. Condolences to his family and the entire Bass Odyssey crew."

A memorial service for Squingy will be held on Saturday in Florida. His body will be flown to Jamaica for the burial.

Deejay David ‘Mavado’ Brooks is calling for the end of the Gully/Gaza war by inviting musical rival Adidja ‘Vybz Kartel’ Palmer to make peace at his birthday bash on Saturday, December 5.

Mavado’s manager, Julian Jones-Griffith, yesterday said he wanted to publicly invite Kartel to make peace once and for all. “Basically we want to invite him to the show at Temple Hall Estate as a show of unity for the nation,” Jones-Griffith said.

Jones-Griffith and Mavado have been in discussions with Bishop Herro Blair and other prominent figures to come up with a solution for the Gully/Gaza issue, which people have insisted is dividing Jamaica. Vybz Kartel is supposed to be appearing on Bolt’s SuperParty in St Ann on the same night as Mavado’s bash.

Jones-Griffith said: “We just want to put it out there, Mavado has been coming under pressure for this Gully/Gaza thing and I’m sure he wants a better Jamaica. I’m sure Vybz Kartel, as a Jamaican, wants the same thing. For the sake of the Jamaican youths we’re inviting him to come on stage to show the people it’s all about the music and dat we can live good. We want him to come and participate, its something that needs to be done and we need a big stage to do it.”

According to Jones-Griffith, Kartel or his representatives can contact them before the show, through the media or simply come to the show on the night. He says Mavado is 100 per cent behind the initiative. Efforts to speak to Kartel were futile up to press time.

This will not be the first time that the two have tried to make peace. In March 2007, the deejays met with DCP Mark Shields to call for an end to the feud, however, weeks later the two were at it again. Jones-Griffith says that will not be happening again: “We’ve been down dis road before and we don’t feel good it ended up going back to the feuding. This is not a publicity stunt, we want to explore how we can do this – reach out to di youths in schools and make it permanent. The war is in no way beneficial to anybody’s career and it’s bringing a lot of negative energy to the country.”

The two have been feuding since 2006 and last year faced off at Sting. Since then they have come under increasing pressure garnering nationwide attention due to the negative effects of the feud.

WOW! So many DJ's and legends have passed this year it's just crazy. Derek B passed away on Sunday night apparently due to a heart attack at the age of 44. He was a UK hip hop legend who brought underground hip hop to the pop charts. i remember jammin to " Good Groove" and " Bad Young Brother" back in the golden days at Busby's in Tottenham Court Road like it was yesterday, and remember listening to the "Derek B Good Groove Show" on LWR on Sunday straight after Tim Westwood. Some old skool peeps will still think of him as a sellout but the man did so much to bring UK hip hop out into the open so you have to give respect where its due. Feelin' kinda gutted right now! NINJAMAN CHARGED WITH MURDER

Police on Saturday charged Ninja Man, born Desmond John Ballentine, with murder, conspiracy to murder and illegal possession of a firearm in last Monday`s killing of a 20-year-old man on Marl Road in Kingston.

Ninja Man, 43 of Annotto Bay, Jamaica, is known for his controversial and pro-gun lyrics and his stuttering and melodramatic style of music.

He launched his deejay career with the Black Culture Sound System at age 12 as `Double Ugly.` In 1980, he joined Killamanjaro and there got the chance to learn from established deejays Super Cat and Early B, and released his debut single as `Uglyman.`

Yet another name change made him the now well known Ninjaman. In 1987, Ninjaman recorded - and produced himself - his first hit single `Protection,` a duet with Courtney Melody. The following years brought many prolific collaborations with producers like King Jammy, Witty, Xterminator, Philip `Fatis` Burrell, Redman, Ini Kamoze, Bobby Digital, Augustus `Gussie` Clarke, and Steely & Clevie and Henry `Junjo` Lawes. It has been said that Ninjaman comes up with all of his lyrics on the spot in the recording studio, in a freestyle manner.

His hits over the years 1989-1992, like `Murder Dem,` `Permit to Bury` and `Above the Law` reinforced Ninjaman’s image of a violent rude boy. One of his most infamous rivalries was the one with Shabba Ranks, leading to a number of clashes.

In 1993, criticism of Ninjaman’s violent and pro-gun lyrics arose, leading to a decline in performing gigs and chances to record.

By 1997, Ninjaman had changed his name once again, now performing gospel reggae songs as `Brother Desmond.` He sought help to fight his Crack cocaine addiction in born again Christianity. It was not a complete changeover though, earning him criticism from parts of the Jamaican Christian community.

In the late 1990s, he was accused (but later acquitted) of having raped a woman at knifepoint in his home and having murdered a taxi driver. He was sentenced to one year in jail in late 1999, after being convicted of unlawfully possessing a firearm and ammunition.

BUSY SIGNAL WANTED BY JAMAICAN POLICE

I thought Busy Signal said that "mi nah guh a jail again"... perhaps he might have forgoten because there are reports that the police are searching for him. It is reported that The Westmoreland Police are looking for DJ, Busy Signal, in order to charge him for using what is described as a barrage of expletives at Sav Impact stage show in Llandilo in the parish on New Year's night.

According to the report "Busy's behaviour was so crude that some fans and patrons expressed shock and disgust at his outburst, which some openly condemned as totally unnecessary and unwarranted."

It also indicated that there were several police personel present at the show and Signal continued to unleash the expletives.

The report further stated that "Busy was being backed by a soundtrack, while a group of musicians were quietly testing their instruments ahead of the next performer.

The deejay became very annoyed and blurted: "A wha di ...deh gwaan?" He looked around and upon seeing the men, he asked the audience: "Sav dat right?" "No," the crowd responded.

Busy walked up towards the men, as they were about to make their exit and shouted in the microphone: "Hey, don't mek mi tell unu fi go ... face. Hey mi a cool youth sometime. Alliance say nuh ... yuself... bwoy."

At the end of his 22-minute performance, a team of police personnel rushed backstage to arrest him, but the deejay escaped.

Said an officer: "He jumped off the step and escaped in a vehicle. We did not know which vehicle he was travelling in so we missed him. We will be trying to charge him as soon as possible."

SO BUSY.. you need to turn yourself in and end this matter quickly ..we cant have a man as talented as you having another thing to be worried about. Anyway write another hit song about this incident... Hot Head Hot Head.. lol

FOUR ACE'S CLUB DALSTON

For over thirty years Dalston resident Newton Dunbar ran The Four Aces Club. The Club started its life in 1966 at 12 Dalston Lane in the entrance halls of the original 1886 Dalston circus and theatre buildings. It became north London's home of international black music and a second home to black musicians. With increasing success in the 1980s Newton expanded the business, as the Labrynth, which regularly packed out the whole of Dalston Theatre. At weekends Dalston Lane was heaving until the early hours.

Filmmaker Winstan Whitter grew up in Dalston and his brilliant documentary film, containing historic footage, about The Four Aces is now out.
